Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the initial performance and the life performance of a lead acid battery by using a positive plate which is prepared by adding an expanded graphite to a positive active material so as to make the porosity of the positive active material to be increased. CONSTITUTION:Lead powder is added with 0.01-5.0% of an expanded graphite the volume of which is expanded 10 times, before the mixture is well mixed and a hard positive paste having a density of about 4.6g/cm<2> is prepared from the mixture by a well known method. Following that, thus prepared paste is packed into a grid made of a lead alloy, before the grid packed with the paste is matured and is subjected to formation, thereby a positive plate being obtained. The above expanded graphite is prepared by treating a graphite powder of large anisotropy with a concentrated sulfuric acid to make a compound to be produced between graphite layers, before the compound is fully dried and rapidly heated at around 1,000 deg.C to make the spaces between the layers to be expanded in the direction along the axis.
