Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a coating composition capable of providing excellent abrasion resistance, excellent transparency, and a high hardness to the surface of a plastic base material, from methylolmelamine, a polyhydric alcohol, and hydrophobic fine granular silica.
CONSTITUTION: A coating composition is composed of a ternary mixture consisting of methylolmalamine (A) whose methylol group is partially or wholly converted into alkyl ether (e.g., hexakismethoxymethylmelamine), a polyhydric alcohol (B) containing two or more OH groups (e.g., tetraethylene glycol), and hydrophobic fine granular silica (C) obtained by the reaction of fine granular silica with a monohydric alcohol or an alcohol containing a monohydric alcohol, or is composed of a mixture containing a precondensate of the two components of the said three ones and the remaining component not condensated. The average grain size of the component (C) is 20W500Å and the molecular weight of the component (B) is 60W 5,000. Also, the ratios of A:B and B:C are 1:0.5W2.0 (gram equivalent ratio) and 1:0.1W5.0 (weight ratio), respectively.
