Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent any internal short-circuit between the positive and the negative electrode, by making the peripheral parts of the separator and the liquid- absorbing material to be compressed by the upper end of a negative ring, which is placed within a negative case and has an L-form cross section and in which a negative electrode made of an amalgamated zinc is packed. CONSTITUTION:A negative ring 8 having an L-form cross section is made of a plastic, a metal plated with an easily amalgamated metal, or the like, and it has a horizontal outwardly extending part 8'. The negative ring 8 is placed within a negative case 3, and a negative active material 4 prepared by molding an amalgamated zinc powder is packed in the ring 8. A separator 5 and a liquid-absorbing material 6 are placed over the negative active material 4. After that, the battery is sealed by a combination of a positive case 1 which is packed with a positive electrode, and a gasket 7 which is interposed between the case 1 and the case 3, thus a battery being constituted. Accordingly, the peripheral parts of the separator 5 and the liquid- absorbing material 6 are compressed by an upper end 9 of the ring 8. Consequently, the location of the negative electrode is facilitated, and any internal short-circuit between the positive and the negative electrode which might be caused by metallic mercury produced as the discharge of the battery proceeds can be prevented.
