Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently control silica sand of a specified particle size range and considerably enhance glass melting speed by introducing starting material silica sand into a rising water flow whose speed decreases in the flowing direction and drawing out floating silica sand together with water from a specified height zone in accordance with particle size. CONSTITUTION:Water is introduced from water feed pipe 2 of the apparatus, and pulverized silica sand from starting material feed pipe 6 to form fluidized bed 9 in straight pipe section 1A. Particles of larger particle size is discharged from discharge pipe 8 and repulverized. Particles of smaller particle size rise in expanding section 1B and are drawn out as floating silica sand together with water from inlet 7A' or 7B' of product drawing-out pipe 7A or 7B selected suitably. Thus, silica sand of a predetermined particle size range for glass is obtd. efficiently without causing clogging or other trouble of a conventional classifying method using a sieve.
