Abstract
PURPOSE: To methylate a phenolic compound at the o-position thereof smoothly and advantageously through the increased reaction activity, by bringing a phenolic compound into contact with methanol in the vapor phase, in the presence of a catalyst containing vanadium and tin oxide while increasing the reaction activity.
CONSTITUTION: A phenolic compound having at least one hydrogen atom in the o- position of the formula (R1WR4 are H or alkyl, e.g. ethyl or methyl) e.g. phenol, o-, m-, or p-cresol, is brought into contact with methanol in the vapor phase, preferably in a molar ratio of 1:1W1:15, more preferably 1:1W1:6, in the presence of a catalyst containing vanadium and tin oxide at temperature in the range of 250W 500°C, to methylate the o-position of the phenolic compound selectively. The composition of said catalyst in the atomic ratio is suitably V:Sn=100:0.1W100:50, preferably 100:1W100:20.
