Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound usable as industrial raw materials, bactericides, and raw materials for phenolic resins with a high selectivity, by methylating phenols in the presence of a catalyst containing Ti or Zr, Sb and oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: Phenols, e.g. phenol or cresol, having at least one hydrogen atom at the O-position are methylated in ther gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst containing Ti or Zr, Sb and oxygen to give the objective compound, e.g. 2,6- xylenol. A catalyst of formula (M is Ti or Zr; X is 0.1W30; g is 20.25W95), e.g. TiSb1 may be prefraly used as the catalyst.
EFFECT: The catalyst has high a activity and selectivity and can be use for a long time. This mthod is economical because of slight decompositin of methanol.
