Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an alcohol continuously, by irradiating a mixture of an aqueous suspension of yeast having an alcohol fermenting competence and a photosetting resin with active light rays to give immobilized yeast, followed by reacting the yeast with a solution of a substrate.
CONSTITUTION: Yeast (e.g., Saccharomyces cerevisiae, etc.) having an alcohol fermenting competence is cultivated in a medium, and a culture solution is collected to give an aqueous suspension of the yeast, to which a photosetting resin (e.g., unsaturated polyester having an acid value 40W200, etc.) having a number-average molecular weight 300W80,000. The prepared mixture is irradiated with active light rays having wave lengh 2,500W6,000Å, to give spherical, cylindrical, ringlike or square pillarlike immobilized enzyme having a corresponding diameter 0.1W3.0mm. A reactor is filled with the immobilized yeast, and a solution of substrate (e.g., solution of grape sugar, etc.) sterilized under heating at 30W32°C is added and reacted with the yeast, to give a fermented solution, from which an alcohol is separated and collected.
