Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a cubic BN sintered body for a tool with superior wear, heat and breaking resistances by using powders of carbide or nitride ceramics, oxide ceramics, etc. as the matrix of a cubic BN sintered body.
CONSTITUTION: Ceramic matrix materials and metallic powder are added to cubic system BN powder, and they are well mixed and agitated with a ball mill. This mixed starting material powder is filled into a reactor and reacted at about 1,300W 1,500°C high temp. under 40W60 kilobar high pressure to manufacture the desired cubic BN sintered body. The mixed starting material powder consists of 10W18wt% cubic BN powder having ≤20μm average primary grain size, 89W5wt% powders of carbide, nitride or the like of Ti, Zr or the like and oxide of Al, Zr or the like and 1W15wt% powder of Al, Fe or the like.
