Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce iron sintered parts having high hardness externally and rigidity internally by subjecting the sealed sintered bodies to surface-hardening treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Phosphorus, sulfur or other sealing components are added to iron- powder, and at the time of sintering, phosphorus, sulfur and iron are caused to make eutectic reaction, whereby holes are closed or an infiltrating material such as copper is infiltrated into iron sintered bodies to seal these bodies, whereby the sealed sintered bodies are obtained. A carburizer is infiltrated into the surface parts of these sealed iron sintered bodies, so that the contents of carbon thereof are increased. Thereafter, these are hardened, whereby the surface hardened layers are formed. Finally, the sintered bodies are tempered. Or a nitride hardened layer is formed in the surface parts of the sintered bodies. Or further, a hardened layer of carbonitride is formed in the surface parts of the sintered bodies. by a gas carbonitriding method.
