Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance mechanical strength of a catalyst carrier and to prevent breakage thereof during operation of an internal combustion engine by filling a cermaic material as a reinforcing material in a flow passage in the vicinity of an outer peripheral part having no catalytic purifying capacity of a honeycomb structure made of a ceramic.
CONSTITUTION: The ceramic reinforcing material is filled in the flow passages in the vicinity of an outer peripheral wall 1 having no catalytic purifying capacity of the ceramic honeycomb carrier. In this case, a filling depth of the reinforcing material to said flow passages 2 is pref. controlled so as to fill said reinforcing material over a total length of said passages toward a longitudinal direction but, if it is aimed that only an end part is prevented from being broken, the partial filling into a predetermined depth from the end part may be carried out. As the reinforcing material, a ceramic material such as cordierite or mullite or a castable refractory material such as an alumina cement or the like can be used. The carrier may be an unbaked one but it is necessary to bake the reinforcing material after filling.
