Abstract

PURPOSE:To ravel out the defect in display that a pattern electrode is seen floating while no electric field is applied, by forming at least the pattern electrode of a transparent conductive film and by providing a transparent conductive film, which is as thick as the said conductive film and has nearly equal refractive index, at some part on a substrate other than the conductive film. CONSTITUTION:The pattern electrode of at least either transparent substrate 1-1 is made of transparent conductive film 2-1 of film thickness d1. At the other part of substrate 1-1, transparent insulating film 3 having a nearly equal refractive index to that of film 2-1 and thickness d1 is formed. On films 2-1 and 3, and the surface of transparent conductive film 2-2 on the other transparent substrate 1-2, an orientation controlling treatment in mutually perpendicular directions is carried out. Two polarizing plates 7-1 and 7-2 are so provided that their polarization axes cross both orientation treatment direction of substrates 1-1 and 1-2 at right angles. This liquid-crystal cell 6 has not the pattern display part seen floating while no electric field is applied and the distinct and excellent-contrast display can be obtained when an electric field is applied.
