Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an indole (derivative) of high purity which is a synthetic raw material for a perfume or amino acid in one stage, by reacting an inexpensive aniline with ethanolamine as raw materials in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An aniline, e.g. aniline or o-toluidine, is reacted with an ethanolamine, e.g. monoethanolamine or diethanolamine, in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. metal of Groups VIII and Ib or a zinc salt, to give an indole (derivative). The reaction temperature is 200W500°C, and the reaction is usually carried out in the vapor phase. Even a nitrobenzene which is a raw material for the aniline, hydrogen and ethanolamine may provide the indole (derivative) in the same method of reaction as described above.
