Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately carry out positioning at the beginning of machining and accurately perform corrective machining etc., by vibrating an electrode or a workpiece, applying electricity to the electrode and the workpiece and detecting and discriminating the change in the resistance between the electrode and the workpiece. CONSTITUTION:A machining liquid is supplied into a machining gap between an electrode 1 and a workpiece 2. Machining pulses are supplied from a power source 11 to perform machining. The electrode 1 is secured on the tip of a horn 4 on taht of a vibrator 3. The horn 4 is provided on a spindle 5 so that feed is caused along an axis Z by a motor 6. When the electrode 1 is vibrated, it approaches and goes away from the workpiece 2 or comes into contact with it and goes off it. At that time, resistance proportional to the length of the gap is detected if the frequency and amplitude of the vibration are constant. An average voltage proportional to the gap resistance is detected as a signal by a power source 14 and a resistor 13 and discriminated by a discrimination circuit 15. As a result, the change in the gap length can be accurately detected and measured.
