Abstract

PURPOSE: To spray a molten material in a desired pattern onto a defined surface area of an article, by placing and interceptor on the way of a high-temperature, high-speed stream such as gas flame, and controlling a cross sectional form of powder grains being injected and flying.
CONSTITUTION: Powder grains 5 are injected into a high-temperature, high-speed gas stream 4 generated by a gas combustion flame spraying burner 3. When the powder grains are injected to the stream, the powder grains are dispersed and a part 6 of the powder grains flies outside the stream. Those grains dispersed outside the stream are intercepted by a water-cooled copper interceptor 2 whose opening 2' has an area equal to the cross sectional area of the gas stream. Consequently, only powder grains flying in the gas stream pass through the opening 2' and reach the surface of an article 1, to generate a spray-coated layer 7. The interceptor 2 is supported by a gun barrel 9 of the spray burner. The interceptor 2 can be moved vertically, horizontally, or back and forth by driving means 8.
