Abstract

PURPOSE:To let firm glass fusion-bonding be accomplished and make mirror-surface finishing easy by using a sheathed pipe of a coefficient of thermal expansion larger than that of optical fibers and pulling the optical fibers together with low-melting- point glass powder into the sheathed pipe at the heating. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber bundle 1 consists of about 2000 pieces of optical fiber strands 1a of soda lime glass. A sheathed pipe 2 of metal is fitted onto the fiber bundle 1 and powder 4 of low-melting-point glass is coated and the assembly is put an infrared ray heating furnace 6 and is heated. Then, the glass powder 4 infilters and deposits in the spacings because of the larger coefficient of thermal expansion of the sheathed pipe 2 but it fills in among the strands 1a when the fiber bundle 1 is pulled in the arrow Y direction, whereby the depth of the glass layer several times deeper than before may be obtained. In addition, the cut layer may be finished to a mirror surface but the work is accomplished by heating of a short time, and therefore there are less damages in the fiber strands 1a.
