Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily determine the distance between a position where an AE sensor is disposed and a position where an AE wave is generated, by detecting the time difference between two peaks of an AE wave signal received by AE sensor, etc.
CONSTITUTION: An AE wave signal is received by an AE sensor 1 and supplied to a time difference detection section 2. The time difference detection section 2 consists of a detector 4, a peak detector 5, a time difference detector 6, etc., and adapted to subject the AE wave signal, which has been input into the time difference detection section 2, to envelope detection to determine the time difference Δt between two peaks thereof. An output from the time difference detection section 2 is supplied to a signal processing circuit 7 so as to calculate the distance L between a position where the AE sensor 1 is disposed and a position where the AE wave signal is generated, in accordance with a formula I, L=Δt/(1/V2-1/V1), wherein V1 and V2 represent the speed of a longitudinal component and a transversal component, respectively, of the AE wave.
