PURPOSE: To make possible the thickness control along the breadth of the rolled material to be satisfactorily carried out, by rotating one work roll of diameter smaller than that of another work roll, following to the travel of the rolled material, and by arranging either one of these work rolls so as to be pressed by a couple of backup rolls movable in the axial direction.
CONSTITUTION: A couple of independently axially movable backup rolls 1, 2, are arranged so as to press the upper work roll 3 of diameter smaller than that of the lower work roll 4. This upper work roll 3 is turned only following to the travel of the rolled strip 7 without being forcibly driven like as the lower work roll 4. Accordingly, the backup rolls 1, 2, are turned as followers due to the friction contact with the work roll 3. Hereupon, since the diameter of the work roll 3 to be pressed by the backup rolls 1, 2, is small, the bending rigidity of the work roll 3 is small; therefore, if the roll bending force is equally impressed on the work rolls 3, 4, the work roll 3 is bent more largely than the work roll 4: hereby, the controllability of the thickness in the axial direction of the strip 7 can be improved.
