Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily obtain the above mentioned product with a high yield, by carrying out electrolytic oxidation of specific alkoxy-substituted-toluene in organic solvents or two layers system of water-organic solvent under the existence of metal salt, such as copper acetate and oxidizing side chain CH3-radical selectively with a high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: Electrolytic oxidation of alkoxy-substituted-toluene of the constitutional formula I (where, R:C1W4 alkyl radical, n;1W5) is carried out in organic solvent, such as CH3OH, or two layers system of water-organic solvent (for example, CCl4, C6H14) under the existence of 0.1W100%, preferably 10W50%, of metal salt, such as copper acetate, copper sulfate, NaNO3. Hereby, alkoxy-substituted- benzaldehyde shown in the constitutional formula II, is obtained. By the above method, oxidiation of CH3-radical on aromatic nucleus is carried out selectively without producing any substituted product, addition product or dimer practically.
