Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare 2,2'-dichlorohydrazobenzene useful as a raw material of dyes, in a high yield, by two-stage catalytic hydrogenation of o-nitrochlorobenzene in the presence of a catalyst and a caustic alkali of a specific concentration.
CONSTITUTION: o-Nitrochlorobenzene I is reduced with molecular hydrogen in the presence of a Pd- or Pt-containing catalyst and a 3NW15N aqueous caustic alkali solution to give the intermediate II. The reaction is carried out if desired in the presence of a naphthoquinone compound as a co-catalyst and an organic solvent, e.g. benzene, etc. When most of the compound I was reacted, a part or the whole of the water layer is removed and thereafter the concentration of the caustic alkali is adjusted between 0.5N and 3N. The catalytic hydrogenation is further continued to give the desired compound III.
