Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the alloy powder of superior acicular characteristic and uniform composition for high density magnetic recording media by heat reducing the modified iron oxide film comprising solid solutionizing metals other than iron into powder of α-FeOOH or α-Fe2O3 by the specific means.
CONSTITUTION: Powder of α-FeOOH or α-Fe2O3 is evenly dispersed in the water or organic solvent dissolved with inorganic or organic acid salts of metals such as Co, Ni, Mn other than iron and the mixture is heated. The modified iron oxide powder obtained through this treatment consists of the particles of superior acicular characteristic in which the metals other than iron are evenly solutionized. Hence, when this is heat reduced by an ordinary method, the magnetic alloy powder of uniform alloy composition and superior magnetic characteristics is formed.
