Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent a fluid from leaking into the external air, by forming a chamber and a narrow passage between a shaft seal and the external air and displacing a seal member serving as one side of the chamber by the rise in the fluid pressure in the chamber to shut off the narrow passage.
CONSTITUTION: A fluid L, which leaks from the seal-up end face S of a shaft seal 12, flows into a chamber 33 and enters into a quenching chamber 42 through a narrow passage 32 so that the fluid is conveyed to a safe place. When the fluid L leaks much into the chamber 33 due to the trouble of the shaft seal 12, the fluid pressure in the chamber 33 rises because the flow resistance of the narrow passage 32 increases. A seal member 19 is then push-moved toward another seal member 28 by the fluid pressure in the chamber 33 so that a face 23 is brought into tight contact with another face 31. A seal-up end face is thus formed.
