Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a mechanical seal, in which flange portion of a driven ring is projected into sealing fluid so that it is held in contact with the sealing fluid on both sides thereof so as to efficiently release heat caused by friction at the sealing end surface, whereby it is enabled to protect the seal ring against wear and cracks.
CONSTITUTION: Surface area of the portion of driven ring 9 where it is held in contact with sealing fluid X is increased by making diameter of flange portion 19 larger than that of flange portion 13, so that heat releasing surface area of the ring 9 can be increased and heat caused by friction at sealing end surface S can be absorbed efficiently by the sealing fluid. Therefore, it is prevented that temperature at the sealing end surface S is increased excessively, and at the same time, sheet ring 4, driven ring 9, packing, etc. can be also protected from excessive temperature rise. Thus, condition of friction and lubrication at the sealing end surface S can be improved and wear at the sealing end surface S can be minimized. Further, sheet ring 4 made of ceramics can be protected against cracks.
