Abstract

PURPOSE: Title compounds as diethylene glycol (allyl carbonate) used as a starting material for glass lenses are effectively purified by treating with an oxidant and then bringing into contact with an inorganic absorbent as activated carbon.
CONSTITUTION: A carbonate with ethylenically unsaturated groups, such as diallyl carbonate or dimethallyl carbonate, is brought into contact with an inorganic adsorbent as activated carbon or zeolite, in the presence of a mineral acid or treated with an oxidant and then brought into contact with an inorganic adsorbent at 60W120°C to give title purified compound free from inpurities as staining contamination. The carbonate with ethylenically unsaturated groups means a carbonate bearing at least one of carbon-carbon double bond in the molecule. The mineral acid is, e.g., sulfuric or phosphoric acid and the oxidant is, e.g., sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide or potassium permanganate.
