Abstract

PURPOSE:Carbon fibers, a phenolic resin and friction modifier are kneaded under pressure and shear and the resulting mixture is formed with heat and pressure to produce said friction material used for automobile brake because of its high stability in friction coefficient and wearing resistance even at high temperatures. CONSTITUTION:(A) 5-60 wt% of carbon fibers preferably of less than 150 mm length, which is prepared from polyacrylonitrile, rayon, or pitch, (B) 10-30 wt% of a phenolic resin as an unmodified, or cashew-modified or epoxy-modified one, and (C) a friction modifier as barium sulfate or cashew-dust resin are kneaded at 70-140 deg.C with pressure and shear and then the resulting mixture is formed with heat and pressure to produce said friction material in which the average length of the carbon fibers is 0.4 mm or less and void volume is less than 15%, thus being used for brake or clutch of vehicles.
