Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a friction material in which friction coefficient is high and abrasion wear is lessened, by a method wherein a thermosetting binder, a filler, a steel fiber and an arom. polyamide fiber are mixed together.
CONSTITUTION: A thermosetting binder, a filler and a steel fiber and an arom. polyamide fiber as fibrous reinforcing materials are mixed together in such a proportion as to give 10W40vol% fibrous reinforcing materials based on the whole volume of the resulting mixt. The mixt. is molded under pressure with heating into a friction material. As the thermosetting binder, a binder consisting mainly of a phenolic resin or a modified phenolic resin is preferred. Examples of the fillers are copper graphite, silica and cured rubber powders. As the steel fiber, a mild steel fiber having a length of 1W5mm and a diameter of 0.1W0.15mm is preferred. As the arom. polyamide fiber, it is preferred to use a polyamide fiber which has a length of 5W30mm and a diameter of 10W15μm and is not molten, but carbonized at about 420°C.
