Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an internal combustion engine with supercharger, in which cams for driving suction and exhaust valves are formed to be used for both of supercharged and non-supercharged operation of the engine, whereby lowering of engine output can be prevented by shifting the cams to their position of non-supercharged operation when some trouble is caused with the supercharger.
CONSTITUTION: Cams are formed on cam shaft 2 such that they have respectively a supercharging cam portion 3 having a large overlap of the suction valve and the exhaust valve and a non-supercharging, normal cam portion 4 having a relatively small overlap of the two valves. The cam shaft 2 is designed to be shifted automatically or manually by lever 8, so that tappet 6a for driving the suction valve and the exhaust valve can be shifted between two positions of the above cam portions 3 and 4. With such an arrangement, if some trouble is caused with the supercharger, lever 8 is shifted so that tappet 6a comes into engagement with non-supercharging cam portion 4. Thus, suction valve and exhaust valve are opened and closed at the timing suited for normal non-supercharged operation of the engine.
