Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare colorless 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile, useful as a herbicide, etc. without side reactions, in high yield, by reacting 2-chloro-6-nitrobenzonitrile with lithium chloride in an aprotic polar solvent, in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride.
CONSTITUTION: 2,6-Dichlorobenzonitrile is prepared by reacting 2-chloro-6-nitrobenzonitrile with lithium chloride in an aprotic polar solvent such as N, N-dimethylformamide in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride, at 120W220°C. The amount of the anhydrous aluminum chloride is 0.1W2 equivalents, pref. 0.5W1.5 equivalents, per 1 mole of the 2-chloro-6-nitrobenzontitile. The aprotic polar solvent is pref. completely dehydrated, and its amount is 0.5W10 parts by weight based on 1 part of the 2-chloro-6-nitrobenzonitrile.
