Abstract

PURPOSE: To form good penetration beads by injecting the controllable gas in opposition to the gravity direction of molten metal thereby letting the penetration beads of the root pass freeze while allowing them to protrude from the surface of the materials to be welded.
CONSTITUTION: The V-groove of pipes 1, 1 of mild steel are butted and arc welded with a welding torch 3 while gas flow 14 is being injected from the direction opposite from the gravity direction of the molten metal from a gas feed pipe. By controlling the gas pressure of the gas feed pipe 13, the gas flow is blown to a molten pool 15 and the pressure thereof forces up the molten pool 15 thereby preventing the drooping down of the molten beads 2 and achieving the acceleration of freezing.
