Abstract

1315907 Flat cable AMP Inc 3 Dec 1971 [17 Dec 1970] 56137/71 Heading H1A A flat cable has signal conductors 12 with a flat shield or ground member 16 of electrically conductive material in a plane parallel to and spaced from the plane of the signal conductors by a dielectric 13 e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate. The capacitance between the signal and ground conductors is altered by cutting elongated slots 18 parallel to the signal conductors out of the shield member; the cable impedance can then be carefully controlled by varying the width of these slots 7 reduce degradation of shielding due to the removal of shielding material a layer of polyvinyl foam may be introduced between a pair of cables; and/or cables may be stacked so that the slots are offset (Figs. 7 and 4 not shown). At each end of the cable a transverse slot 24 is formed to allow terminals to be connected to the conductor end 17. To avoid miscratch due to the lowered capacitance in this area, bridging clips 26 of conductive material are provided as shown.
