Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform temperature control accurately, and to improve the thermal efficiency, by passing a polycrystalline fiber precursor through specific drying, nonfusing and calcining devices comprising three zones heated at specific temperatures, respectively.
CONSTITUTION: A precursor for polycrystalline fibers, e.g. alumina or zirconia, is passed through a drying and nonfusing device comprising the first, second and third zones 3, 4, and 5 at 50W200°C, 200W350°C, and 350W500°C, respectively. The precursor is heat-treated in the calcining device comprising the first, second, and third zones 7, 8, and 9 heated at 500W700°C, 700W800°C, and 800W1,600°C, and the pinch rolls 10, to give the objective polycrystalline fibers.
