Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a device, which is of non-contact type which has a low moment of inertia and which is free from the vibrations of a transmission shaft, by attaching two polarizing plates to the shaft and by measuring the light having passed therethrough.
CONSTITUTION: First and second poralizing plates 2 and 3 are attached to the input and output of a torque transmitting shaft 1, respectively. There are also provided a light source 4 and an optical detector 5. When the shaft 1 receives a torque, a relative torsional angle is formed between the two polarizing plates. If this torsional angle is denoted at θ, and if the optical internsity of the light from the light source 4 is denoted at I0, the intensity I1 of the light having passed through the first plate 2 is expressed by I0/2. On the other hand the intensity I2 of the light to be detected by an optical detector 5 after having passed through the second plate is expressed by equation (I). In other words, the value proportional to the torsional angle θ is detected, it is possible to provide a device, which is of non-contact type having a low moment of inertia although it has a simple construction and which is free from the vibrations of the torgue transmitting shaft.
