Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable smooth arc shifting by short-circuiting a part of d.c. reactor when the consumable electrode makes contact with the base metal and thereby steepening rise of welding current.
CONSTITUTION: The three-phase a.c. from the terminal 4 is rectified by thyristors TH1WTH6 through the main transformer T and output from terminals 5, 6. The d.c. reactor L2 of the output side is provided with an intermediate tap, and, at the same time, a switching element TH7 such as a thyristor etc. is connected between the tap and one end of L2 in direction of main current. The position of the intermediate tap is the point where the reactance L', L" become L'≤L". When the consumable electrode comes in contact with the base metal, the element TH7 is in conduction by gate signal and short-circuit is caused between one end of L2 and the intermediate tap. At this time, the reactance of L2 becomes L' only and the welding current Iw rises steeply. However, the rise is restricted to some degree and breakdown of the thyristor is prevented. After starting of arc, the element TH7 becomes nonconducting state automatically.
