Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a high quality ingot contg. a rare earth element of high yield by melting raw materials in a melting container with a water-cooled melting furnace using a plasma arc as a heat source under an inert gas atmosphere followed by solidification.
CONSTITUTION: Raw materials are charged into skull crucible 3. The stmospheric gas in melting chamber 1 is exhausted, and an inert gas such as argon is introduced to hold the internal press. of chamber 1 at 0.5W10 atm. Next, an electric current is supplied between plasma torch 2 and the raw materials in crucible 3 to ingnite plasma 9, thereby forming molten metal 7 in crucible 3. After forming an adequate amt. of metal 7 the current supply is stopped, and metal 7 is solidified in crucible 3. Metal 7 may be poured into ingot case 10 and solidified or continuous-cast and solidified. By this method an alloy ingot contg. much rare earth element is easily manufactured on an industrial scale.
