Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance useful as a raw material for polymers or reactive emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization readily in high purity at a low temperature, by sulfonating an aromatic alcohol ester of (meth) acrylic acid, and by neutralizing the sulfonate, if necessary.
CONSTITUTION: An ester obtained from an aromatic alcohol of formulaI: (Ar is benzene or naphthalene nucleus, and may be substituted by alkyl or phenyl group; A is alkylene group; n and x are O or integers ≥1, n+x is ≥1) and (meth)acrylic acid is sulfonated to give the objective substance of formulaII: (M is cation; m is 1 or 2; R1 is H or methyl group). Preferably, a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, is used in esterification. The ester is neutralized with a basic subtance, e.g. an alkali hydroxide, if necessary.
EFFECT: No polymer formation with a slight discoloration, and easy purification.
