Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the hardness and corrosion resistance of coating, by forming primary coating on the surface of Mg of Mg alloy by anodic oxidation method, then by forming secondary coating by a.c. electrolysis in aq. metallic salt soln.
CONSTITUTION: Mg or Mg alloy is, for example, a.c. electrolyzed in an aq. soln. comprising 240 g/l NaOH, 83 ml/l ethylene glycol, 2.5 g/l oxalic acid, at 80°C, and 20 V to form primary coating. Thereafter, it is washed with water, then a.c. electrolyzed in the secondary electrolytic bath comprising 30W50 g/l nickel sulfate, 30 g/l boric acid at a voltage 10W15 V for several min., and is washed with water and dried. Hereby, an ash-colored coating of beautiful apperarance is obtained by anodic oxidation. The coating adheres strongly to the primary coating, and has increased hardness and corrosion resistance, without causing damage in the primary coating.
