Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the thickness of solidified layer of casting exactly with a simple device by measuring signals from both an ultrasonic wave generator and a receiver by means of a time measuring circuit and by computing the thickness of solidified layer of the casting by means of an arithmetic circuit.
CONSTITUTION: When a pulse current is fed to the ultrasonic wave generating coil 9 from a high frequency pulse power supply 10, an ultrasonic wave is produced, passes through the soldified layer of the cast piece 4 and molten metal of the unsolidified layer and reaches the opposite side. And an eddy current is produced in the surface of the cast piece 4 by an interaction between the oscillating force of the ultrasonic wave and the magnetic field in an iron core 6, which is generated by applying voltage from a power supply 7 to a field coil 5. A gate circuit 20 to which a signal more than a certain level is fed from a detecting coil 17 sends a time pulse produced by a time signal generator 21 to a counting circuit 22. A time signal T is emitted from the counting circuit 22 by the time pulse. The thickness of the solidified layer can be measured in the arithmetic circuit 28 by both the time signal T and a signal of a temperature setter 23.
