Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the cracking and dimensional defect of castings of the shell mold using the captioned sand particles obtained by coating the sand particles by the resin comprising modifying novolak type phenolic resin by bisphenols and cumarone compounds as a binder.
CONSTITUTION: A suitable amount of formadehyde based on the total weight part of bisphenols and phenol is added to the mixture of the suitable ratios of bisphenols, phenol and cumarone compounds and the modified novolak type phenolic resin used as this binder is produced in the presence of acidic catalysts by using the reaction conditions and operation methods commonly used in the manufacture of novolak type phenolic resins. This modified novolak resin is mixed with the sand particles at an arbitrary ratio by a known method, whereby the sand particle surfaces are coated with the resin. If necessary, it is possible to contain assistants such as calcium stearate and waxes in this coated sand.
