Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the agglomeration of particles of a foamable thermoplastic resin during a preliminary foaming thereof, by introducing a cooling medium into a hollow agitator shaft and hollow agitation vanes in a cylindrical vessel in which particles of the mentioned resin are heated to preliminarily foam the same, tubular members provided among the agitator vanes, and a side wall of the cylindrical vessel, whereby the particles are cooled to a temperature not higher than the softening point thereof. CONSTITUTION:Particles of a foamable thermoplastic resin are supplied into a cylindrical preliminary foaming vessel 1. The particles are subjected to preliminary foaming in the vessel 1. The preliminary foaming of the particles is carried out by thermally expanding the same while agitating the particles by agitation vanes 2 extended from an agitator shaft 3 and blowing into the vessel 1 a heating medium from holes in a perforated board provided at a bottom portion of the vessel 1. During the preliminary foaming operation, a cooling mdium is introducted through a cooling medium supply pipe 10 into at least one of the hollow agitator shaft 3, agitation vanes 2, tubular members 6 provided among the agitation vanes 2, and a side wall of the vessel 1 to cool the particles to a temperature not higher than the softening point thereof. Thus, the fusing of the particles of the resin to metal surfaces and the agglomeration of the particles in a fused state can be prevented.
