Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the resolution of a locator and to improve the directive characteristics by cutting a piezoelectric element to such an extent that flaws are formed in the packing member and by forming flaws in the flat electrode of the other side of the packing element at a pitch several times the element cutting pitch.
CONSTITUTION: Electrodes 4 and 4' are mounted from the upper side of a packing element 3 for absorbing ultrasonic waves to another side which is positioned at a right angle or another angle with respect to the former. A piezoelectric element 1 adhered to the electrode 4. A number of cut grooves 5 are formed in the upper side of the element 1 by means of a cutter to such an extent that they slightly eat the packing element 3 so that the element 1, the electrode 2 and the electrode 4 are divided into n pieces. Since, however, the other electrode 4' is not divided, the electrode 4' at this side is cut with grooves 6 every several oscillators so that plural oscillators are connected to form one block. By accomplishing the cutting operations twice in different directions, it is possible to enhance the resolution of the locator and to improve the directive characteristics of the ultrasonic waves.
