Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase circumferential tensile strength of a plastic pipe socket and reduce the amount of preparatory wall thickening at pipe end portion by a method wherein the outside surface of an expanded end portion of a plastic pipe is treated by a roll moved in the circumferential direction. CONSTITUTION:A plastic pipe end portion E is heated, and then expanded to be a socket by a method wherein the heated portion is fitted over a socket-forming core A, blow method, or similar method. A roll C is contacted with the outside surface of the expanded portion, and moved in the circumferential direction of the portion. By this movement of the roll C, the plastic in the expanded portion is drawn in the circumferential direction and formed into the final socket shape. Because the circumferential tensile strength of the socket is increased by the drawing treatment, the hoop stress of the socket with respect to the water pressure inside the pipe due to the increase of socket diameter can sufficiently be coped with, even when the wall thickness of the socket is roughly equal to that of the pipe. Thus, the amount of preparatory wall thickening at the pipe end portion can be reduced.
