Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce inexpensively a shell-moldable phenol resin composition exhibiting excellent hot properties at high temperatures, by dissolving, with stirring, a high-purity lignin in a phenol-formaldehyde resin.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 40W60wt% of a solid resin prepared at a mixing mol ratio of a phenol-formaldehyde resin, of 0.55W0.70 under mild conditions, and (B) 60W 40% of a high-purity lignin discharged from a Kraft process and not containing sulfur compounds and other impurities are mixed and dissolved, forming a shell- moldable lignin-phenol resin composition having a reduced amount of phenol. The component (B) is a lignin which is obtained by destruction of a lignin with a pure alkali, or a lignin which is obtained by destruction by fermenting fungi and which does not emit an odor. And further, as the lignin (B), a lignin which has a molecular weight as low as possible is preferred. An example of such a lignin is an acid lignin prepared by digesting wood, straws or the like with NaOH alone and then neutralizing the alkali lignin produced to a pH of 3W4.
