Abstract

1469178 Alkaline wetproof adhesive compositions BASF AG 9 Aug 1974 [10 Aug 1973] 35159/74 Heading C3U A wetproof adhesive comprising a mixture of 99-80% by weight of alkali-digested starch and from 1-20% by weight of a reaction product produced by reacting 1 mole of urea with 0À5 to 1À6 moles of formaldehyde, the percentages being based on the total weight of the solids and the mixture having a pH of 10À5 or more, is obtained by a process in which the aforesaid two ingredients are mixed, preferably at 20‹ to 100‹ C. The composition may contain up to 10% by weight of resorcinol and up to 10% of the urea used may be replaced by phenol, thiourea, dicyandiamide or melamine. The mixture may also be obtained by mixing the reaction product of urea and formaldehyde with starch and digesting the starch at 20-100‹ C. under alkaline conditions or by adding urea and formaldehyde before or during the alkaline fusion of the starch, the components being allowed to react at 20-100‹ C.
