Abstract
PURPOSE: To suppress the by-product formation and to obtain isobutene from a C4 mixture in high yield, by effecting hydration, dehydration, and decomposition in the liquid phase in the presence of an ion exchange resin catalyst, without requiring high temperature and pressure, to reduce the heat supply from the external source.
CONSTITUTION: An isobutene-containing hydrocarbon in fed from the pipe 2, into the reactor 1 comprising the strong acid cation exchange resin catalyst, and water (marked ×) is introduced from the pipe 3. After the continuous contact reaction at 50W150°C (or in many stages), the reaction mixture is separated in the stationary tank 7, and the hydrocarbon phase is distilled in the distillation column (1) to give tert-butanol (TBA) from the bottoms. The aqueous phase is then distilled in the column (2) to give the overhead TBA stream. The stream is dehydrated and decomposed in the closed pressure reactor 10 comprising the same resin, liquid mixture of circulated TBA, and water at 90W180°C and 1.5W10atm. The isobutene-containing gas is fed from the pipe 18 to the distillation column 3 to obtain isobutene continuously from the pipe 20.
