Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and recover isobutylene from mixed butylene, in high yield and purity, by hydrating isobutylene selectively with an aqueous solution of a heteropoly acid, removing unhydrated hyrdrocarbons from the mixture, and regenerating isobutylene from t-butanol.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutylene is selectively separated from an olefin mixture containing n-butene and isobutylene, by (1) hydrating isobutylene to t-butanol using an aqueous solution of a heteropoly acid having Mo, W and/or V as ligand elements, at <100°C, (2) removing the unreacted hydrocarbons from the mixture, (3) heating the aqueous solution containing t-butanol and the heteropoly acid, and (4) dehydrating t-butanol while removing the produced isobutylene from the system. The conversion of isobutylene to t-butanol is pref. carried out under high pressure to keep the reaction system as liquid phase.
