Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a hollow fiber usable for hemodialysis, by incorporating acetamide as a swelling agent into a solution of a cellulose ester in a specific organic solvent, and by introducing a liquid into the hollow part of the filamentary material formed through extrusion of the solution from an annular slit.
CONSTITUTION: Acetamide as a swelling agent is incorporated into a solution of a cellulose ester (C) in an organic solvent, e.g. acetone or DMF, which is miscible with water and dissolves C. The solution is then extruded through an annular slit into a filamentary material, and a liquid is introduced into the hollow part inside the material. The water-miscible organic solvent and swelling agent are rapidly replaced by water in the coagulation bath on introduction into the bath to form desirable uniform pores in gelling, and easily removed in the rinsing step. Thus, the desired selective permeability can be imparted to the fiber.
