Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance both wear resistance and toughness by increasing the average crystal grain size of a high-carbon low-alloy steel with specific chemical composition to more than a certain value by heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: The average crystal grain size of a high-carbon low-alloy steel, containing 0.6W1.2% C, 0.15W1.6% Si, 0.15W1.6% Mn, 1W6% Cr, 1% or less Ni, 1% or less Mo, 1% or less V, and inevitable impurities such as P, S, etc., in addition to Fe, is increased by a heat treatment to approx. 30μm or more. Thus, the fracture toughness of the steel can be raised and thus the life of wearing-resistant machinery parts using the steel for bearing, rolls for cold rolling, etc., can be improved greatly.
