Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent bulging and exfoliation of the nitrided layer of a martensitic stainless steel after nitriding by adding Ni to the steel and regulating the grain size no. to 4W10 and the δ-ferrite content to below 3 %.
CONSTITUTION: 1.5W2.0 wt.% of Ni is added to a martensitic stainless steel such as SUS.403. The grain size no. of the steel is regulated to 4W10, and the δ-ferrite content to below 3 %. When the steel thus treated is nitrided, bulging and exfoliation do not occur in the surface nitrided layer. So, a surface with superior wear resistance is obtd., abnormal wear does not occur, and machinery made of the steel elongates its life.
