Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain pinacolone (tertiary butyl methyl ketone) easily and in high yield, by the reaction of 3-methyl-1-butene with formaldehyde at a specific temp. in the presence of an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid.
CONSTITUTION: Pinacolone is obtained by the reaction of 3-methyl-1-butene with formaldehyde at 80-200°C under the atmospheric pressure-30Kg/cm2 for 1-10 hr in the presence of an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, where 2-methyl-1-butene or 2-methyl-2-butene, possibly formed as a by-product in the preparation of 3-methyl-1-butene, may be present. The acid used is isolated from the organic layer after the reaction and recycled at need by concentration or other methods.
EFFECT: No use or formation of harmful substances and large amounts of industrial wastes. This process may not cause the environmental pollution.
USE: Solvent or synthetic intermediate for pesticides, rubber goods.
