1,162,078. Preparation of methylal. A. B PASHKOV, N. M. VDOVIN, O. N. VORONKOVA, R. R. DRANOVSKAYA, A. M. EGOROV, A. F. KLJUSHNEV, P. I. SHARTIN, M.V. ZEIGMAN, V.V. PATRUSHEV and Y.V. EPSHTEIN. 12 July 1968, No. 33379/68. Heading C2C. Methylal is produced by treating with methanol the acid wastes from the process of chloromethylating copolymers of styrene with compounds of the vinylaromatic series with monochlorodimethyl ether in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and subsequent rectification. The still bottoms remaining after rectification may be heated to 80-100‹ C. under reduced pressure or 100-150‹ C. at atmospheric pressure to carbonize any organic impurities which are then precipitated and the remaining solution evaporated.
