Abstract

PURPOSE: To let display part emit fluorescence by applying stimulus fields such as electric fields or the like to the thin layer of the liquid crystal comprising dissolving of organic fluorescent material thereby putting the same in a light scattering state.
CONSTITUTION: Liquid crystal which is added with organic fluorescent material such as Rhodamine 6G is held between two sheets of substrates such as glass provided with transparent electrodes. When no voltage is applied from a voltage generator 9 to the transparent electrodes, the organic fluorescent material having absorbed excitation light hυ1 from the surroundings emits fluorescence hυ2, but the fluorescence is hardly integrated in the layer thickness direction of the thin liquid crystal. On the other hand, the fluorescence is integrated in the direction orthogonal to the layer thickness but the liquid crystal is optically evenly oriented and therefore the fluorescence is taken in the liquid crystal and is not released to the display side, thus giving a dark display. When a voltage is applied, the centers 10 having light refractiveness or light scattering characteristic are produced in the liquid crystal and the fluorescence hυ2 is released to the display side, forming a bright display.
